The TCSA needs to be accountable to students at all times. This is faciliatated through strong communication and transparency to the students, but also from the Executive to the rest of the board.
Accountability
TCSA Voting
Currently the TCSA elects its members through a first past the post system (FPP). Conversation about electoral reform have been happening across the country, and moving away from this archaic system at Trent will result in candidates that students want. For more information about FPP voting watch this YouTube video below.
Commissioners Communication
Although the TCSA has a large number of commissioners, they are largely silent as hubs for information for their constituency. To increase the reach of our commissioners, I propose that each commissioner gets their own Facebook page to share information and event to their constituency. These pages would be jointly administered by the Commissioner and the TCSA's Communications Director. These would not be spaces for political conversations, but rather a source of information for students.
TCSA Hiring
When the TCSA currently hires a permanent staff the decision is made within the hiring committee and the executive. In order to have a more accountable hiring process as TCSA president I would encourage a policy change to have hiring conditional upon approval by the board. When the hiring committee chooses a candidate that they feel is most appropriate this recommendation would come to the board who would make a final decision. This allows for more oversight of the executive, and lowers the possibility of friends being chosen for permanent positions.
Coverage in the Arthur
Although the President has no direct role within the Arthur, I feel that it is important for the Arthur to increase its coverage of the association. I will encourage a reporter to attend all of our meetings, and if one does not come I will send my Presidential report directly to the editors every week. The newspaper is where students can look to for information holding the association to account and I hope that increased coverage will result in more information getting to students.
